First: Gmail doesn’t use Folders. Why?

To help you organize your mail more effectively, Gmail uses Labels instead.

Here’s why Gmail thinks labels are better than folders:

Second: Creating Labels

Labels do all the work folders do and give you an extra bonus: you can add more than one to a conversation. Once you’ve created a label, you can view all the messages with that label by searching, or by clicking the label name along the left side of any
Gmail page.

1. Click the Labels drop-down menu or if you have keyboard shortcuts enabled, type l. Or, just click Settings>Labels.
   
   
2. Select Create new.
   
   
3. Type the name of your new label and click Ok
   
   

Any selected messages will automatically be categorized under your new label. If you’d like to keep organized, you can remove a labeled conversation from your inbox by archiving it and view it later by clicking All Mail, or by clicking the label name along the left side of any Gmail page.

To apply a label to a message, you can select the checkbox next to the message(s) in question, and then select the label name from the Labels drop-down menu (or you can label a single message while you’re reading it by using the drop-down menu or the keyboard shortcut L). You can also drag a message to a label’s name to move that message to a label.

Third: Edit a label name

1. Click the down-arrow to the left of the label.
   
   
2. Select Rename.
   
   
3. Enter the new label name, and click OK.
   
   

All the messages categorized under your old label name will now be categorized under your new label.

Fourth: Organizing and deleting labels

You can control which labels appear in your list on the left.

1. Click Settings>Labels
   
   
2. Click the show or hide link next to each label to choose whether it’s listed. Or, if you see a label you don’t need anymore, you can always click remove. (You’ll have to confirm that you’d like to remove the label by clicking OK).
   
   

You can also show, hide, or delete one label at a time by clicking the down-arrow to the left of that label.

Use the Move to drop-down menu or the keyboard shortcut v if you want to apply a label to a message and move it to that label at the same time.

1. You can create your own folders on your AOL® or AIM® Mail account to help organize your e-mail. The new folder will be added to the folders in your Mail panel.

2. On the Mail panel, click the Edit Folders link.

3. Click the New Folder button.

4. In the Create Folder box, type the name you want for your folder
   (Master Technician ONLINE).

   Note: The name of your folder can be any combination of letters and numbers. The name cannot begin with a space, %, or #, and it cannot contain \, :, *, ?, “, < , >, |, or %.

5. Click the Create button.

6. Click the Return To Mail button.

Understanding Email Filters – What is an
Email Filter?

FILTERS instruct your Email box to separate Emails and put them in a specific location (or folder). You can create your own Filters – to separate personal from work or specific criteria.

Today’s free online Email clients (AOL, YAHOO!, Gmail, MSN Hotmail, etc.) generally come with a default filter system. This default filter is dedicated to SPAM (unwanted, solicited Emails).

We will show you how to create a folder and filter Email from mastertechmag.com. You can apply these steps to create any new folder and filter system…

First: Create the folder

1. Next to the Folders label or the My Folders label on the left side of your Yahoo! Mail page, click the Add link. (It’s next to the Folders label if you don’t have personal folders and the My Folders label if you at least one personal folders).

   
   

   

   A window opens where you can type the name of the folder
   (Master Technician ONLINE).

   
   

2. Type a folder name (Master Technician ONLINE) in the window,
   then click the OK button.

   

   Tip: Folder names can include letters, numbers, and the hyphen (-), space ( ), and underline (_) characters only.

   
   

   Your new folder appears alphabetically under the My Folders label in the
   folders list.

   

Second: Move already received messages to newly created folders.

1. Open the folder containing the message or messages that you want to move.

   
   

2. Check the box to the left of one or more messages.

   

   
   

3. Click the Move button, then select a folder from the menu.

   

   
   

   Yahoo! Mail moves the messages to the selected folder.

First: Create/Add the folder

1. Sign in to the Windows Live Hotmail website with your Windows Live ID.
   
   
2. In the left pane, click Manage folders.
   
   
3. Click New.
   
   
4. Enter a name for the folder, and then click Save.
   
   

Second: Move messages already received

1. Sign in to the Windows Live Hotmail website with your Windows Live ID.
   
   
2. Open your Inbox.
   
   
3. Click the check box next to each message that you want to move.
   
   
4. On the Action bar, on the Move to menu, select the folder that you want to move the messages to.
   
   

Note: You can delete or rename only those folders that you have added yourself. You can’t delete or rename the Inbox, Sent, Junk, Deleted, or Drafts folders.

Third: Create Filters for future Emails.

1. Sign in to the Windows Live Hotmail website with your Windows Live ID.
   
   
2. On the Action bar, click Options, and then click More options.
   
   
3. Under Customize your mail, click Automatically sort e-mail into folders.
   
   
4. Click New filter.
   
   
5. Follow the on-screen instructions to specify which messages you want to filter and where you want to filter them, and then click Save.
